![]() Brown, still unsure of Stigler's intentions, ordered his dorsal turret gunner to target his guns on Stigler but not open fire, to warn him off. He then flew near Brown's plane in close formation on the bomber's port side wing, so that German anti-aircraft units would not target it, and escorted the damaged B-17 across the coast until they reached open water. Stigler later told Brown he was trying to get them to fly to Sweden. However Brown and the crew of the B-17 did not understand what Stigler was trying to mouth and gesture to them, and so flew on. Twice Stigler tried to persuade Brown to land his plane at a German airfield and surrender, or divert to nearby neutral Sweden, where he and his crew would receive medical treatment and be interned for the remainder of the war. I saw them and I couldn't shoot them down." Stigler instead recalled the words of one of his commanding officers from JG 27, Gustav Rödel, during his time fighting in North Africa: "If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself." Stigler later commented, "To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. To the American pilot's surprise, the German did not open fire on the crippled bomber. Through openings torn in the damaged bomber's airframe by flak and machine gun fire, Stigler was able to see the injured and incapacitated crew. ![]() He soon took off in his Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 and quickly caught up with Brown's plane. Brown's damaged, straggling bomber was spotted by Germans on the ground, including Franz Stigler (then an ace with 27 victories), who was refueling and rearming at an airfield. Many of the crew were wounded: The bomber's exterior heavily damaged. This left the bomber with only two dorsal turret guns plus one of the three forward-firing nose guns for defense. Several of the gunners' weapons had jammed. The bomber's internal oxygen, hydraulic, and electrical systems were also damaged, and the bomber had lost half of its rudder and port (left side) elevator, as well as its nose cone. Further damage was sustained, including to the #3 engine, reducing it to only half power. ![]() Brown's struggling B-17 was attacked by over a dozen enemy fighters of JG 11 for more than ten minutes. After an extensive search by Brown, the two pilots met each other 50 years later and developed a friendship that lasted until Stigler's death. Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler had the opportunity to shoot down the crippled bomber but did not do so, and instead escorted it over and past German-occupied territory so as to protect it. Charles "Charlie" Brown's B-17F Flying Fortress Ye Olde Pub of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) was severely damaged by German fighters. The Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler incident occurred on 20 December 1943, when, after a successful bomb run on Bremen, 2nd Lt. ![]() The output of each Generator can be routed to a Mixer ‘Insert’ track (think mixer channel in more conventional DAW/sequencer mixing nomenclature) where you can process the sounds further using an array of the usual effects or EQ options, as well as making the standard level and pan adjustments to create your overall mix. Once a number of patterns had been created, these can be arranged (sequenced) and layered along a timeline of a multi‑lane Playlist window to construct a song‑based musical arrangement. Essentially, a collection of sound sources (Generators in FL‑speak - samples or virtual instruments) can be used to build individual patterns within a simple step‑based grid or a MIDI sequence (within a piano‑roll editing environment). The same core principles still remain at the heart of the software in the latest release. For those unfamiliar with the software, providing you have access to a suitable Windows 32‑bit host, running an early version in trial mode would soon make FL Studio’s roots very obvious. Rather wonderfully, there is also a pretty comprehensive archive of version downloads spanning all the main versions. Helpfully in that regard, Image Line’s website has a fascinating ‘history’ timeline page charting the FL Studio development. Given that the last full SOS review of FL Studio was quite some time ago (v9 back in the March 2010 issue), it’s worth providing a bit of background here and considering the over‑arching features FL Studio provides before going on to dig into what’s new within the latest release. So, with the recent arrival of FL Studio 20.8, is this now a DAW/sequencer that has moved beyond its electronic music roots? History Toys The subsequent 20‑plus years have obviously seen some considerable changes. Fruity Loops’ MIDI‑only step sequencer simplicity and modest cost gave it an obvious appeal to the electronic music maker on a budget a DIY EDM tool for the masses. By this date, the likes of Cubase and Logic offered a combination of both MIDI sequencing and hard‑disk‑based audio recording (albeit still in its infancy). That’s undoubtedly true of FL Studio, which launched as Fruity Loops in 1998. However, not all DAW/sequencers are created equal and one of the key reasons the market is so diverse is that many of today’s (seemingly generic) DAW/sequencers started life as somewhat more specialist tools. And, while you could have a very entertaining Friday night pub‑style philosophical conversation about the relationship between the rise of the DAW/sequencer and the quality of the music we now experience, the impact is undeniable. Second, by emulating the complete studio experience in modestly priced software, it has played a very significant part in democratising the music recording and production process. First, it has, to a very large extent, placed itself at the very heart of (almost) everyone’s recording process. Famed for its speed of use, the latest version of FL Studio is a highly sophisticated music production environment. Details like its full-color LCD display, metal fenders, hydraulic disk brakes and integrated tail lights that function as turn signals. Does it come with racks, bags, lights and fenders, and do those accessories make sense? Is there anything else that should be included but isn’t?.Every bike on this list we’d call fairly priced. Value: How much e-bike are you getting for your dollar? The e-bike market has grown flush with overpriced and under-spec’d electric bikes that don’t offer much value. But in all cases, we evaluated the bikes based on a few key criteria, mainly: While others, like the Blix Aveny Skyline and Ride1UP 700 Series, were sleeper contenders chosen for very specific reasons.
